Acupuncture in Stirling

Ruth McWilliam Acupuncture is a mobile acupuncture service providing acupuncture treatment, by a registered nurse, in your own home, in the Stirling and Forth Valley area.

Ruth is a member of the British Medical Acupuncture Society and is regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and Healthcare Improvement Scotland. Healthcare Improvement Scotland is the government regulator for independent healthcare in Scotland, so you can be reassured that the service meets the high level of standards and safety required. Currently, I am the only registered nurse in the Stirling area that has a license from Healthcare Improvement Scotland to practice acupuncture.

I offer a range of different acupuncture treatments, including medical acupuncture, dry needling, and auriculotherapy.

Conditions treated

Many people are surprised to learn what acupuncture may help to treat. The following are issues which patients commonly seek acupuncture treatment for:

  • Acute and Chronic pain: Muscoskeletal pain is one of the main symptoms that patients present with, the most common being lower back, neck, and shoulder pain.  However, patients do present with all types of pain and pain conditions, for example, arthritis, sciatica, tennis elbow, etc.
  • Headache/Migraine: Acupuncture can be of benefit for the treatment of headaches and migraines. If fact, NICE recommend the use of acupuncture in the treatment of tension-type headache and migraine.
  • Women's Health: Period pain, Menopausal symptoms, Fertility support, etc.
  • Bladder Symptoms: Irritative bladder etc.
  • Digestive Problems: Irritable Bowel Syndrome etc.
  • Stress and Anxiety

This is not an exhaustive list. If you would like to know if acupuncture could help you then please call me. I am here to help and happy to advise.

Further Information

The British Acupuncture Council has produced a series of fact sheets which indicate the range of conditions that acupuncture may be useful in helping to treat. These can be found here.

Although these are written from a traditional acupuncture point of view, medical acupuncture can also be helpful in the treatment of many of these conditions. The British Medical Acupuncture Society has good information for patients on their website here.

About Ruth

I spent nearly 15 years working in the field of environmental biology as a researcher, project leader, and teaching fellow, before deciding on a career change and becoming a nurse.

I have had a long-standing interest in complementary health care. I first learned about acupuncture when I had treatment for a painful condition I had been diagnosed with and was amazed with the results it achieved. I decided to find out more and following my research I chose to take the plunge and train to become an acupuncturist myself.

I completed training given by the British Medical Acupuncture Society, who provide courses for registered healthcare professionals, and I am now a certified Medical Acupuncture practitioner. Due to my own experience, I have a special interest in treating pain.

I ran an acupuncture clinic in Scarborough in Yorkshire for 2 years where I was able to treat clients with a wide range of issues. It was a great experience but the time came to relocate back home to Scotland. I am now offering a mobile treatment service in the Stirling and Forth Valley area, where I will treat you in your own home. Areas outside Forth Valley, but close to Clackmannanshire where I am based, will also be considered for home visits. Please call to enquire.
